HDMI stands for high definition multimedia interface and is becoming the standard connection on most AV products. It replaces the SCART socket for TV, DVD and playing games by carrying pictures and sound together. The signals it transmits are all digital. As you might've realised, HDMI can deliver high definition pictures as well as transmit some standard definition.

Upscaling DVD players also use HDMI technology by using digital processing to give improved picture quality, but not so good as to be classed as high definition like HD DVD or Blu-Ray.

Rememeber that your TV will also require an HDMI input, ideally having two or three for other appliances. Most new LCD Tvs, plasma Tvs and projectors have at least two or three but if you require more inputs you can use a switch-box.

HDMI, however, does not always mean you'll get better, high definition pictures. An HD ready symbol will establish compatibility. HDMI also does not guarantee superior performance. Most of the time you will get a better result compared to analogue connections like RGB and S-Video but some DVD and SD digital TV channels will look worse on large high resolution screens.

As with USB ports, there are different versions and standards of HDMI and products using newer standards of HDMI can be put together and are compatible with earlier versions of HDMI. To benefit from new versions your peripherals and LCD TV, plasmsa TV or projector must all be completely compatible with the latest HDMI version.

Not all HDMI cables are the same and if you've spent a lot on your home cinema equipment, then make sure you buy a good quality HDMI cable. Also, if you're connecting across a long distance then you'll certainly need a top quality, high performance cable.
