Blu-Ray recently competed with HD-DVD in the high definition format wars and came out victorious. So what's it all about?

Blu-Ray gets its name from the blue laser used to read/write on this type of disc. As the Blu-Ray light beam has a short wavelength, more data can be put on a Blu-Ray disc than a standard DVD disc which uses a red beam light. This results in a Blu-Ray disc storing about six times more data than a two-layer DVD and over ten times that of a standard DVD. All this extra data, as you'll have realised, gives a much better, clearer picture. Blu-Ray discs also store more data than DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, holding up to 25GB of data on a single layer disc and up to 50GB of data on a dual layer disc. This equates to 9 hours of high-definition video on a 50GB disc.

Will Blu-Ray discs play on regular players? The answer is no as Blu-Ray discs use a blue light beam to read the data that a convential DVD player's red beam can't understand. This also applies to HD-DVD. Even though they both use a blue beam the technology is different so they aren't compatible with each other.

Next question. Will conventional DVDs play in a Blu-Ray player? The answer is yes! They'll even look better than how they did in your old DVD player but will certainly not have the high definition you would get from a Blu-Ray disc. They'll also play your CDs.
