A DVD VCR combi is a must if you don't want to be without a VCR, have a large archive of video tapes and have limited space. You can also transfer your programmes and films from VHS to DVD. There are various types of DVD VCR Combis on the market and listed below are some of the features you might want to consider before purchasing. We'll look at DVD features first.
Scan type: This determines how your picture is displayed on your TV. There are two types, imterlaced and progressive. Without getting technical, progressive gives a better picture.
Supported formats: It isn't just DVDs that DVD players can play. Music-wise most will support CD along with CD-R with some even supporting MP3 encoded music on CD-R discs. Some DVD combi players will play the following formats; CD, CD-RW, DVD+R,
DVD+RW, DVD video, picture CD, VCD and SVCD.
DVD recorder: Some DVD combis can record to a DVD-R/RW or DVD-R. If you want to record TV programmes or films or transfer a VHS tape to DVD format, your DVD VCR combi will need this feature.
Disc capacity: Top end DVD players can hold up to 300 DVDs but the vast majority will hold between one and five.
Now I'll list some VCR features to consider.
Number of Video Heads: A bigger number of heads on your VCR will give a better picture on your TV and will give a better recording quality.
Automatic head cleaner: Some VCRs clean the video automatically at set intervals in turn stopping debris and dust from building.
Search function: These let you navigate between certain parts of the video tape, eg adverts and certain scenes. Some of these functions are:
Commercial advance-lets you advance through adverts quickly.
Frame advance-lets you play parts of a film frame by frame.
Instant review-lets you instantly rewind/replay a scene or part of a film.
Index search-lets you assign numbers to certain scenes of a film so you can use your remote to navigate to these scenes as and when.
Audi format: Mono sound is a single channel played through one speaker while stereo sound has two channels going through two speakers. Most VCRs will offer stereo sound.
Recording format: VCRs record in three different speeds; single play (SP), long play (LP) and extended play (EP) with the best quality being SP.
