Bass is generated by air moving inside the cabinet so as you might've guessed, the larger the unit, the better the bass. Floorstanding speakers are portable and their overall sound quality and performance make them the number one choice for audiophiles.

Outdoor speakers are great to have especially in the warmer months. You could be doing a bit of gardening, reading the newspaper, magazine or a good book or just relaxing but outdoor speakers will enhance your time outside no-end. Outdoor speakers come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, colours and prices. They can be installed on display for all to see, camouflaged to blend in with the greenery or disguised to look like a garden object.

Wireless speakers are about convenience so you can put them where you like in your home without worrying about wires. Whether you want speakers in the basement, upstairs in a bedroom or out the back on the patio, wireless speakers will do the job.

Wireless speakers work in a similar way to speakers with wires but the sound is transmitted to the speakers with infrared signals or radio waves. The signals are able to pass through the walls, doors and furniture. Wireless speakers come with a transmitter which you attach to the stereo. There's a limit to how far the speakers can be from the transmitter and the sound

quality isn't quite as good from what you'd get from speakers with wires.

If you want better sound from your TV without getting a surround sound system, then a sound bar is a great option. They need little space, minimal wiring and are a great way to improve your TV's audio output. Sound bars are a good addition to your LCD TV or plasma TV and even though they can't match the realism a home cinema system offers, they come highly recommended. Their small size makes them ideal for a smaller room like a bedroom. Below are some questions you may wish to consider before purchasing a sound bar.

Is it stereo or surround sound you want? Good stereo sound can be provided by some sound bars and they will improve on the sound you'll get from your TV's speakers. They have amplification bulit in so a separate amplifier or receiver won't be needed giving a nice, sleek set-up. If it's surround sound you're after from your soundbar, then you have two options to consider.

Sound bars with virtual surround sound: These sound bars eliminate the need for having several speakers strategically placed around the room, which can often be impractical for some people. Obviously, the overall audio effect won't be as good as having the full set-up but they are still a very good option.

Sound bars that are part of a full surround sound system: These sound bars provide left, centre and right channel audio from a single unit and are often called 'LCRs'. For these you'll need a home cinema system amplifier along with the multiple speakers and subwoofer to complete the system.

Do you want a sound bar with built-in amplification? The majority of sound bars have this and just require the audio components, rather than require a separate home cinema amplfier. However, some sound bars need amplification and need to be hooked up to a home cinema system. This type of sound bar is recommended for people who already have a home cinema system. This sometimes leads to better sound quality as you're using a separate amplifier.

Which room will it go in? Standard sound bars work fine in small/medium size rooms but you'll want a bigger, better sound bar

for a larger room. Room shape should also be considered. A square/rectangular room with four walls would be suitable for a

'beaming' sound bar which bounces the sound off the walls. This type of model, however, would lose its effect in an open plan room. These rooms need sound bars using sophisticated technology that 'tricks' your ears into thinking the sound is coming from different directions.

Does the sound bar have all the audio inputs you need? This question only applies to sound bars with built-in amplification as

passive sound bars will connect to an amplifier instead. Check your sound bar has enough inputs for your DVD/Blu-ray player,

cable/set top box, games console and any other appliance you might want connected.

Does the sound bar come with a subwoofer? If you want full-range sound deep then think about getting a subwoofer to compliment your soundbar. All sound bars have a connection that let you connect a subwoofer if they don't already come with one.
