Sony's origins began in in 1946 when Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company). Japan's economy was in dire straits after the war but Ibuka and Morita got by by repairing radios and making voltmeters while constantly designing new innovative products. The first of these to be manufactured was an automatic rice cooker. They conceived the brand name Sony from the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny-boy and officially became the Sony Corporation in 1958. In the UK alone, Sony employs 4,500 people and many more world wide where they are consistently at the forefront of electrical and electronic manufacture.
