3D LED TVs are LCD TVs that uses 3D LED backlighting. Light Emmitting Diodes (LEDs) are used for the backlighting instead of flourescent lights. There are several benefits that 3D LED TVs have over LCD TVs. 3D LED TVs produce greater contrast, brighter images and deeper blacks. Models can be made very slim and 3D LED TVs use less power than LCD TVs.

3D LED TVs are seen as greener than plasma TVs and LCD Tvs as they are more energy efficient and have a longer life. 3D LED TVs don't use any mercury during manufacture unlike CCFL backlights. However, other elements like gallium and arsenic are used so they can't be classed as being super eco-friendly.

Most LCD TVs use a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (LCD-CCFL). This method of backlighting should be differentiated from a true LED screen or an OLED screen. OLED, OEL or AMOLED TVs are completely different from 3D LED TVs.

Benefits are offered by the variations of LED backlighting. The first commercially available LED backlit LCD TV featured RGB LED arrays to offer a colour garnet around twice that of conventional CCFL LCD TVs. Edge LED lighting was introduced later and the main advantage of this was the ability to build thinner units. With this though, there is the risk of losing screen uniformity.

Mega contrast ratios can be offered as LEDS can be switched on and off faster than CCFL displays. When the LEDs are off they can produce deep blacks with high brightness when they are on.
