LED TVs are actually LCD TVs that uses LED back-lighting. Light Emitting Diodes LEDs are used for the back-lighting instead of fluorescent lights. They are lighter and slimmer than LCD and plasma sets and will last for several years whatever you use them for. There are several benefits that LED TVs have over LCD TVs. LED TVs produce greater contrast, brighter images and deeper blacks. Models can be made very slim and LED TVs use less power than LCD TVs. Most LCD TVs use a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (LCD-CCFL). This method of backlighting should be differentiated from a true LED screen or an OLED screen. OLED, OEL or AMOLED TVs are completely different from LED TVs. Benefits are offered by the variations of LED backlighting. The first commercially available LED backlit LCD TV featured RGB LED arrays to offer a colour garnet around twice that of conventional CCFL LCD TVs. Edge LED lighting was introduced later and the main advantage of this was the ability to build thinner units. With this though, there is the risk of losing screen uniformity. Mega contrast ratios can be offered as LEDS can be switched on and off faster than CCFL displays. When the LEDs are off they can produce deep blacks with high brightness when they are on.
