Tech Explained: Sony & YouView Partnership

by Michael Gilmore  on  18th February 2015

Sony and YouView recently announced a new partnership meaning YouView functionality will be combined into this year's range of Android Bravia TVs. So as well as having a Google-powered goggle box, you'll have all the benefits of YouView.

YouView has over 70 live TV and radio channels, 7 day catch up and a massive on demand library. All your favourites are available including many in HD plus you can access pay TV channels such as Netflix, Now TV and Sky Store. BT and TalkTalk customers can also add additional content with their TV packages.

YouView has an incredible scroll back guide combining catch up TV from BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5. It's easy to use; simply scroll back, select your programme and view straight from the guide. Whatever mood you're in, you'll always find something to watch.

YouView has a huge library of on demand programmes, films, series and radio. If you're not sure what to watch and need a bit of inspiration then check out on demand. It's organised so you can see which programmes are the most popular and which have been newly added. Alternatively, you can browse by category or provider instead.

If you're a film fan you'll love the large range of pay movies available from Now TV and if you're into Sky Movies then check out unlimited access with a monthly Sky Movies Pass.

If you've found a show you love and want to view another episode then YouView will find it for you. Simply press a button to access and watch all related episodes. Plus, YouView's mini guide lets you scroll through channels while watching TV. You can see what's currently on and what's coming up on all of the channels. Plus, you can scroll back up to 12 hours to check if there's a show you've missed out on and want to watch.

The Bravia TV menus - Sony Select for suggested content, Inputs for peripheral access, Apps for Android fare, videos and games and Settings for configuration – were user friendly and navigated well using simple swipes of the flick remote control. There are still a few matters yet to be finalised such as whether the set will offer multiple user log-ins. However, you can still use it without a login and forfeit Android app access.

The remote is very similar to 2014's model but has voice control. With this you get a very effective search facility and web browser with images that look fantastic.
